Commitment

Commitment!

How many times have you TRULY committed to a diet or fitness program for any length of time in your life? The answer for me is sadly, just a few.

How many times have you SAID you were going to COMMIT to a diet or fitness program and failed? The answer for me is unfortunately, a LOT!

Tell me if this sounds familiar – you just started Day 1 of a new program and sometime in the afternoon you nonchalantly walked by the cookie jar in the kitchen and somehow you magically shoved a cookie in your face.

Worse yet, we have no clue why we did that. It just happened. The Oreo just magically disappeared in our mouths! Was it habit? Boredom? Why do we do that?...time after time?

Let’s first talk about COMMITMENT. Commitment is defined as ‘dedicated to a cause, activity, or person.’ I’ll go further and say that commitment is an all-or-nothing proposition. It cannot be half-assed.

C’s get degrees in college, but ho-hum effort with fitness and nutrition will lead you down the familiar road of disappointment.

Commitment is a personal decision that you back up with FOLLOW THROUGH!

Committing to a marriage, being a parent, or a friend requires constant and daily follow through! Fitness/nutrition is no different. We can’t be halfway committed to anything and expect to get the outcome we want!

Think about sports:

- Tiger Woods has to follow through meticulously on putts to win the green jackets.

- Steph Curry has to follow through perfectly on free throws to maintain his league-leading 94% free throw shooting percentage.

- Tom Brady has to follow through on his passes or else the defense is going to have a field day.

The same is true with the commitments we make “in life.” It doesn’t matter if it’s related to our spouses, family, friends, or especially ourselves. If we don’t follow through, we are going to go astray.

In Larger Than Life, we talk a lot about Personal Integrity – doing what we say we’re going to do. Everything seems to boil down to that. When I first made my commitment in 2014, I was finally to a point where I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. I knew things had to change. There was no way in H-E-double-hockey sticks I was buying a size 40 pant. I was busting at the seams in my 38’s and drew a line in the sand.

I knew I had to make a change. If I kept making luke-warm commitments and kept dipping into the cookie jar, nothing would change. I finally flipped the switch in my brain and went 100% all-in. I joined an amazing local gym - Xtra Mile Fitness, surrounded myself with people that pushed me to level up in all areas of life and lost 50+ pounds that first year and have kept it off ever since.

I’d love to talk with you about leveling up your life. One of the most important decisions I made along my journey was to hire a coach to teach me what I didn’t know. That’s what we do in Larger Than Life. Ready to draw your own line in the sand? I’m here to listen!
