When you’re stuck getting started…

 

I talk with folks every day who have trouble getting started. The Internet and "fitness gurus" like to make getting fit and healthy seem super-complicated.

Newbies sometimes feel like they have to figure everything out before they get started! With the best of intentions, they find themselves planning to oblivion. Scheduling exactly when they're going to eat, when they're going workout, buying a notebook to record things, etc. Heck, they might even make a spreadsheet and breakdown every minute of the day for every day of the week.

Now don't get me wrong. Detailed plans can be a very good thing. BUT, often times I see people do what is called...

"Procrastination via Planning"

Hear me out.

They spend a crazy amount of time concocting the PERFECT plan all the way down to the gnat's @$$, but don't ever get around to EXECUTING it!

Executing on a decent plan is infinitely better than inconsistently working the perfect plan! (read that again)

Most people know enough to start making some positive habit changes, but rather than taking action and doing something new and scary, they get stuck by trying to figure out the perfect meal plan or the perfect fitness regimen, etc.

In my opinion, starting and then adjusting, is a much better strategy. Start with something as easy as saying I'm going to focus on a certain amount of steps per day or hitting a certain calorie amount. JUST EXECUTE ON SOMETHING! The rest will come! Action is the great equalizer!

If we wait until the plan is perfect, WE'LL NEVER GET STARTED! We get paralysis by analysis and a month goes by and we're nowhere closer to our goal!
