Ready to Dominate Your Sleep?
Tell me if this sounds familiar. You have the best intentions to wake up early and knock out that 6am workout in the morning. You eventually get to bed and then BOOM! Your alarm seems to go off in a heartbeat! Ugh!
You instinctively hit the snooze button. Then again, and again, and again. You are literally exhausted from lack of sleep and just can’t seem to make it happen.
I’ve talked with LOTS of people that have told me a similar version of this story. How do we fix it?
Well, first, let me ask you if you are INTERESTED in fixing this issue or if you are truly COMMITTED to it? If you’re just interested, you will likely skim this article and do nothing. If you are COMMITTED to solving it, you will EXECUTE on many of the points. Only you can make that determination. The goal here is to get DEEP sleep (the kind that makes you feel truly rested):
Limit screen time 30-60 minutes before bed. This includes phone and television! The blue light generated from these devises has proven to compromise sleep quality. You might argue this is unrealistic in today’s environment. Well, are you interested or committed? If you just can’t make this happen, consider buying a pair of blue blocking glasses. I purchased a pair similar to these off of Amazon for $13. They work great!
Keep your bedroom cool! My optimal sleeping temperature is around 66 degrees (yours is probably somewhere between 64-68 degrees).
Keep your bedroom pitch black! Studies have shown that even light from a TV or alarm clock can impede DEEP sleep. Do your best to black out your room!
Avoid caffeine late in the day. This includes soda, many pre-workouts, tea, etc. Too many stimulants will definitely inhibit your body from calming down enough to fall asleep.
Exercise daily! Crushing a workout or even taking a 30 minute daily walk will improve your body’s ability to get quality sleep.
One last BONUS tip. If you’re not used to waking up early to workout, then there are a few additional steps I recommend to make that process easier.
Get your butt to bed earlier. If you’re anything like me, you probably stay up late doing useless things anyway. Are you interested or committed? Make it happen.
Consider ramping up your wakeup time. If you are currently getting up at 7am and want to change it to 5:30am, the cold turkey approach may not work. Try first getting up 30 minutes earlier the first day - see how that goes - then ratchet it up to 60 minutes, then 90 minutes earlier until you hit your target.
One last thing - before you go to bed, lay out everything you need for the morning. Your clothes, keys, purse, etc - with the intention that ZERO decisions need to be made in the morning. You can just get up and go!
